When breathing is difficult, your desire and ability to do the things you enjoy become challenging, or can feel out of reach. UVM Health Network Home Health & Hospice offers an in-home pulmonary rehabilitation program called Better Breathing for persons with breathing difficulties. Our physical therapist will work with you on exercises to help you conserve energy and provide information on how you can reduce the impacts of diseases such as COPD or Heart Failure.
When Better Breathing is right for you
Our Better Breathing program is for people with diseases that affect their breathing and impairs their ability to perform daily activities. These include Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, lung and congestive heart failure, serious asthma and neuromuscular disease. You must also be a non-smoker or working toward smoking cessation and have an order from your doctor.
Better Breathing Services
The Better Breathing program helps you regain your quality of life using specialized therapeutic approaches including:
- Exercise training and breathing strategies
- Energy conserving techniques
- Postural training
- Anxiety coping strategies
- Education about their disease
- Medication management & instruction in the use of medication delivery device
This program is focused on helping you reach your goals and better manage your illness. Individuals who have completed this program have improved their ability to walk and reduced their shortness of breath.
